Useful Tip :
Tourist heading out to take part in the cultural extravaganza this year should bear in mind that the parade tickets usually sell out months in advance. The tickets available through the travel agencies and scalpers are quite expensive. But, if you don't want to miss the excitement of the carnival, an easier and cheaper way is to take part in the Rio's street carnival. Here you also don't have to worry about buying tickets or costumes and you can still have the same amount of fun.
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro
Carnival is Rio's main event that takes place every year during the peak of summer. It is one the most vibrant and colorful festivals that attracts thousands of visitors from around the world. This four day celebration starts on Saturday and ends on Fat Tuesday. The dates of Carnival change every year. The origin of the festival dates back to the ancient Romans and Greeks who celebrated the rites of spring. Huge celebrations were held throughout Europe. The same concept of "celebration or carnival" was brought to Rio by the Portuguese around 1850. The practice of holding balls and masquerade parties was imported by the city’s bourgeoisie from Paris. Over time, this festival acquired some regional elements that made it much more unique in its concept.

The most important feature of this Carnival is that it not only is a source of entertainment, but also gives an insight into the native culture. This euphoric event is marked by singing, dancing and, entertainment. The preparations for the festival start months in advance, and huge crowds throng to the streets to visit the cultural fiesta.

Almost all of the music played during the carnival is Samba. It is a uniquely Brazilian music that originated in Rio. Samba schools are a vital part of the carnival. The performance of the local street bands is widely popular, more than 300 hundred of them participate in the festival and the number increases every year. This is an incredible event and one that should be experienced at least once in your life!
